Gas Spring FAQ: Force, Materials, Lifetime and Installation

A gas spring is to help lifting and lowering objects and consists of multiple seals, rod, piston and a cylinder filled with Nitrogen and a small amount of oil for lubrication and damping.

Gas springs are being charged with Nitrogen which is an odorless, colorless, unreactive gas. 78% of the air we breathe is Nitrogen.

Gemini Gas Springs™ are available in carbon steel with QPQ rod and epoxy coated cylinder or completely in stainless steel.

No, Gemini Gas Springs ™ are maintenance free and ready for use. In dusty environments the rod can be wiped-off with a clean cloth but recommend to use a dust cap or a rod protector.

No, there is no need for special handling or documentation with transport of gas springs. A provision of IATA/NTSB/Transport Canada states that a cylinder/bottle with low pressure up to a value in Bar or Psi is to be deemed as harmless. Most if not all gas springs do not reach this value and therefor do not require special handling or documentation with air transport.

Gemini Gas Springs ™ are being built from the highest quality materials available on the market. Commonly number of cycles would be between 50.000 and 100.000 however much depends on the application with its usage, stroke length and force. In practice a higher number of cycles may be achieved.

All our connecting parts are interchangeable and gives the client the flexibility to change last minute end connectors. We recommend to secure end fittings with a thread locker blue for medium and red for a permanent securing.

Gemini Gas Springs™ equipped with connecting parts must be mounted in line and should be able to pivot freely during operation. With applications that may see some misalignment we recommend using ball joints or rod end bearings. Gas springs must not be exposed to twisting or side forces, this will result in prematurely failure or bending of the piston rod.

Gemini Gas Springs™ are suitable for temperatures -35°C up to +90°C / -31°F up to +194°F. At the request of the client we can manufacture gas springs suitable for -45°C/-49°F or +200°C/+392°F.

Gemini Gas Springs™ can be mounted in any direction however we do recommend mounting a gas spring with the cylinder part to the object that needs to be lifted. In this way damping and best lubrication of the seals will be achieved.

When clients are not sure about the force we offer the possibility of Gemini Gas Springs™ with a bleed-off valve. Gas springs with a bleed-off valve can be adjusted to any required force by the client. Should client accidentally bleed-off too much then we recharge them for free.
