About Lockable Gas Springs

Lockable gas springs can be found in many applications to help lifting, balancing or lowering objects without using external air or hydraulic equipment.

A gas spring consists of multiple seals, rod, piston and a cylinder filled with Nitrogen and a small amount of oil for lubrication. In many ways they work the same as compression spring with the only difference that the rod can be locked at any position of the useable stroke length.

The hollow rod contains a release pin, by pushing in this pin the piston valve opens and enables the rod to compress or extend.

The most commonly used lockable gas compression springs are available in 3 locking types, other locking features on request please contact us for possibilities.

The rod with piston moves in nitrogen only, once the valve is closed anywhere along the available stroke length the rod will be locked in its position. Depending on the amount of force that is being applied to the spring an increase or decrease of bouncing will take place.

• Rigid in pull - semi rigid in push direction:

With this type the cylinder is separated in 2 compartments. The rod with piston moves in an oil chamber and separating nitrogen with a floating piston. Because the piston moves in oil only the rod remains rigid locked in pull direction up to mechanical properties of the lockable gas compression spring. In push direction the lockable gas compression spring will remain rigid until the force exceeds the value of the floating piston. Locking force in push direction depends on diameter of the lockable gas compression spring. Ø10/23: 3.6*F1; Ø1028: 5.8*F1 ( gas spring force ).

• Rigid in pull - push direction:

With this type the locking force is rigid up to the mechanical properties of the lockable gas compression spring. A special separated piston and floating piston locks the rod anywhere along the available stroke length in a rigid position.
